Bizet’s Carmen

Friends of the MSO, the Singapore Symphony, present music Tchaikovsky predicted to be the most popular opera in the world. As salacious as it is genius, Carmen’s premiere was one filled with strife. A work that finally reveals the starry heights Bizet’s music can reach; his opera shocked the audience of the Opéra Comique by putting their private sensuality on display. Throughout the work, Carmen and Don José relationship is unravelled; full of flawed humanity, seduction, weakness, and passion. Brilliantly constructed, Bizet’s music vividly evokes its Spanish setting: a combination of authentic Spanish melodies, such as the famous Habanera, as well as his own kaleidoscopically colourful creations such as the Gypsy song. Although the premiere was denounced, Carmen has conquered the operatic world and become a universally beloved exploration of love, seduction, and tragedy.
