MSO and Australian String Quartet: Death and the Maiden
The Australian String Quartet joins the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to perform a string orchestra version of Schubert’s String Quartet No.14 Death and the Maiden. Drawing its soubriquet from the theme of the second movement which the composer repurposed from his earlier work of the same name, this quartet has become a pillar of the chamber music repertoire. Bordering on programmatic, Schubert blends his rich lyricism with extreme contrasts to vividly evoke the maiden’s struggle with death.
