Now Streaming: Haydn's Miracle Symphony

Nicholas Carter conducts a program celebrating new voices and miraculous music. As with many of the soubriquets of Haydn’s symphonies, his Miracle symphony is not entirely accurate. Although the tale of a chandelier falling mid-concert and miraculously not injuring the audience is true, it was actually at another of the composers London premieres. Despite this inflated subtitle, this music still lives up to it; one of the finest examples of Haydn’s craft and wit. Anne Cawrse is an Australian composer on the rise, with a string of recent accolades and impactful premieres. Featuring MSO Principal Cor Anglais Michael Pisani as soloist, she describes her work as ‘a prayer, a celebration, and a meditation on the quiet still spaces, the silence amidst the hustle, and the enduring power of music.’ A musical response to a quote by Aldous Huxley, it’s fitting that the cor anglaise often has some of the most melancholic and profound moments in the repertoire: “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” FEATURING Nicholas Carter, conductor Michael Pisani, cor anglais PROGRAM HAYDN Symphony No.96 Miracle ANNE CAWRSE The Rest is Silence, Concerto for Cor Anglais and Orchestra
