Concerto for Drumkit and Orchestra
Celebrated drummer David Jones, Benjamin Bayl and the MSO perform Joe Chindamo's exciting and daring new work, paring virtuosic grooves with luscious orchestral textures. From Joe: The very presence of the drum kit in a Symphony Orchestra signals that the instrument is there in the capacity of an accompanying role, usually as part of a rhythm section. It also implies that the genre of the music we are about to hear lies outside the symphonic repertoire. By way of this concerto I endeavoured to break away from such stereotypes and position the drum kit squarely within the realm of contemporary classical music, and demanding the same bravura from the soloist - and orchestra - as one would expect from any other instrumentalist/orchestra in the traditional concerto repertoire. Taking aside the drum kit for a moment, David Jones is one of those musicians who seems to be able to do impossible things on the instrument, with zen-like ease, placing him in the ranks of an elite group of rare virtuosi, of which there are but a few on any instrument. This said, the concerto does not relegate the orchestra to an accompanying role, as is the case in the concerti of Paganini and Liszt. This work, on the contrary also generously shines the spotlight on the orchestra, therefore rendering the concerto a collaborative effort between the soloist and Orchestra. Joe Chindamo Sept 2022
