Vasily Petrenko conducts The Wasps: Overture

Experience the vibrancy of Vaughan Williams’s early period with this MSO.LIVE production of The Wasps: Overture (1909). Commissioned by the Greek Play committee of Cambridge University, The Wasps dramatises the witty charm of Aristophanes’s satirical comedy and was the first of Vaughan Williams’s three forays into incidental music. From its opening evocation of the buzzing of wasps, the overture is a richly detailed yet structurally concise work, combining buoyant woodwinds, pointed brass, and nostalgic melodies that take us to the heart of the English countryside. With its trademark energy, the MSO performs this overture under the direction of celebrated Russian-British conductor Vasily Petrenko, who ‘conducted with an assuredness that comes from a deep knowledge of the score’ (ClassikON).
