Chris Moore performs Harold in Italy

Journey back in time and place as MSO Principal Viola Chris Moore performs Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, one of the great nineteenth-century depictions of landscape and travel. Harold in Italy takes us through the charm and mystique of Italy's Abruzzo region through the adventures of its eponymous soloist, a choleric traveller modelled loosely after Lord Byron’s Childe-Harolde. Written in 1834 after the thunderous success of the Symphonie Fantastique (1830), Harold in Italy's confluence of concerto and symphony was a key moment in the Romantic vogue for program music, and the work is marked by the vivid scene-painting that made Berlioz a household name. Moore’s rendition of Berlioz’s musical travelogue, featuring MSO Chief Conductor Jaime Martín at the helm, drew ‘palpable affection in Hamer Hall during the copious bows and applauds.’ (Classikon)
