Recorded in Hamer Hall at the 2023 Ryman Healthcare Spring Gala, 34-year-old Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang – Gold Medal winner at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition – delivers a five-star (The Age) performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1. “(Zhang) gave a commanding interpretation of the Tchaikovsky, on which he stamped his technical authority from the outset… he created some beguiling moments of musical poetry, aided by sensitive accompaniment under chief conductor Jaime Martin,” wrote The Age. Classic Melbourne praised Zhang, saying he delivered “an exhilaratingly memorable reading of this piano warhorse… Zhang thrilled as much with his delicacy and lyricism as with his assuredly virtuoso technique.”
