Ligeti’s Atmosphères leapt into public consciousness after Stanley Kubrick’s unauthorised inclusion in the soundtrack of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Perfectly capturing the endless expanse of space, this work defies conventional music structure. In his own words wishing to “write music without beginning or end”, Ligeti instead seamlessly layers sustained textures, creating an exquisitely all-enveloping sound world.
