Set in the Melbourne Recital Centre, Deborah Cheetham’s Wominjeka Song Cycle is a rare presentation of the complete cycle of eight songs from the acclaimed composer and MSO First Nations Creative Chair. Since 2014, Cheetham has composed and performed a welcome song at the MPavilion opening, Australia’s leading architecture commission. Each song is a musically expressive welcome to Bunjil’s River Country, composed in response to the changing architecture and design of each year’s MPavillion. Wominjeka is the Boon Wurrung word for welcome, and through Deborah’s pieces, reflects on the country that we gather on. The performance combines the talents of musicians from Short Black Opera, Dhungala Childrens’ Choir, Ensemble Dutala, Orchestra Victoria, MSO and Consort of Melbourne with translations and cultural guidance provided by N'arweet Aunty Carolyn Briggs AM.
