Dukas' The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was premiered in Paris on May 18, 1897 under the baton of the composer himself. While a popular hit since its first performance, it is best known for its use in the immortal 1940 film Fantasia, which made the work a popular favourite among generations of listeners beyond the concert hall. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is an example of a symphonic poem, a genre of late-nineteenth-century programmatic music (music with a story) written by composers such as Liszt, Strauss, and Sibelius. Based on a 1797 poem by the German poet Goethe, it tells the tale of an old sorcerer and the mishaps of his young apprentice. Dukas' portrayal is filled with buoyant rhythms and delightful colours that showcase the different sections of the orchestra. In this MSO.LIVE release, MSO Chief Conductor Jaime Martin conducts Dukas' gem from the 2023 Spring Gala.
