In this month dedicated to Australian music, MSO.LIVE begins with Margaret Sutherland, one of the trailblazing women in twentieth-century Australian music. Haunted Hills (1950) is a tone poem which evokes the lush surrounds of the Dandenong Ranges and the effects of colonization on its Traditional Owners, the Bunurong and Woiworung people of the Kulin Nation. Haunted Hills, Sutherland wrote, is ‘a sound picture written in contemplation of the first people who roamed the hills, their bewilderment and their betrayal’. Jaime Martin and the MSO capture these experiences and emotions in a rare performance of Sutherland’s work.
