Join MSO and Chief Conductor Jaime Martín for this deep dive into Mozart’s enigmatic and radical final symphonies. Mozart’s final three symphonies were all written together in the summer of 1788, when the composer was 32. After enjoying several years of prominence and celebrity in Vienna, Mozart’s career suddenly lost momentum when Vienna declared war on Turkey earlier that year, and to complicate matters further, he was in significant debt. These three symphonies were to be his last symphonic works before the early, tragic death of classical music’s boy genius. The Symphony No.39, featuring an arresting extended introduction and a delightfully scrambling finale, sets the scene for this marvellous month of Mozart. ABC wrote, ‘The work is laced with typically lyrical and memorable melodies. You could almost imagine Mozart was telling his audience "This is the warm-up round" before hitting them with the dramatic and tempestuous Symphony No. 40.’
